A Brief History of Battersea SW11
The Battersea district is part of London on the south bank of the River Thames. Historically the settlement was clustered around St. Mary’s Church on a site that featured many former parishes. Some of the land of Battersea was reclaimed by draining the marshland and building culverts.
Before the Industrial Revolution the area was farmland, providing goods for the City of London and surrounding areas. The area was transformed in the middle of 18th century by the emerging industry. The Thames river provided water for industrial processes and steam engines and water transport. During the nineteenth century Battersea developed into a major town railway centre.
Industry started to move away from Battersea in the 1970. The factories that defined the area were demolished and replaced with modern apartment buildings.
